Propane (C3H8) is a
saturated hydrocarbon
that has been observed in the
murky orange clouds of
Titan,
the largest moon of Saturn and second largest satellite in the solar system after Ganymede. Propane was
first identified in
Titan's atmosphere in 1981 by
Voyager,
but quantification of how much is there in
2003.
Propane has also been detected in the atmosphere of
Saturn
and may also be present on
Jupiter. Propane has not been detected to date
in the interstellar medium; methane remains the only
alkane detected outside the solar system.
Propane is commonly used as a fuel.
