Methyl ketene

The detection of methyl ketene (CH3CHCO) was reported in 2023 by Fuentetaja and co-workers. As with a number of other recent detections from the Grupo de Astrofísica Molecular at the Instituto de Física Fundamental in Madrid, this one was drawn from the QUIJOTE line survey of TMC-1 made with the Yebes 40m telescope. A previous search by Bermúdez et al. reported in 2018 using lower resolution observations was not able to detect methyl ketene toward TMC-1, Sgr B2, Orion KL, and B-1b, even though the observations were made with capable telescopes (ALMA and the IRAM 30m telescope). As a very recent detection, confirmation of methyl ketene and new searches for it in sources other than TMC-1 await.

Methyl ketene may be present in Earth's atmosphere, produced via reactions of unsaturated hydrocarbons with hydroxyl radicals (OH) or ozone (O3).
