Isotopologues differ only in the number of neutrons in the atomic nuclei of a given molecule.
The primary table of identified astromolecules
lists the isotopologue of each compound with the most
abundant isotopes: 1H,
12C, 14N, 16O, and so forth. The table on this webpage lists the identifications
of rare isotopologues.
All forms of molecular spectroscopy are shifted by isotopic substitutions.
Electronic transitions shift because zero-point energy contributions depend on
nuclear masses. Vibrational transitions shift because force constants depend on
nuclear masses. Rotational transitions shift because moment of inertia components
depend on nuclear masses.
