Mailing #2005.02 (November)
In late September and early October I emailed a number of people to see
if there might be interest in starting a network designed to improve
connectivity among those of us who contribute to astrochemistry via
molecular-level theory. I received affimative responses from about half
of the folks I contacted, which was good enough for me to continue to
the next phase. The current mailing list has over three dozen names.

I've put together a basic website, www.molres.org/TAPN, that covers much
of what I had in mind for the initial structure of the network. Every-
thing on these pages is tentative and open to discussion. Please view it
      has a starting point.

(If you did not receive the initial mailing or would like to review it,
      I've posted a copy here: www.molres.org/TAPN/TAPN_archive.html )

I am sending this both to those who expressed interest and those who did
not respond the first time around. If you don't respond this time, I
will remove you from the mailing list and not bother you again. If you
did express interest before, I need to hear from you again -- I'm seek-
ing some basic information from those who wish to participate to add to
the website. I estimate it will need only about 15-30 minutes of your
      time.

My intention is to go public with the website by around December 1st, so
we can introduce the TAPN at PacificChem. I also hope that those of us
who will be going to Hawaii with have a chance to meet informally to
      discuss the TAPN.

There are two places on the website where I need specific input. If you
would like to be included on the Network Nodes page, I need URLs, as
available, for your group or institute and for individuals. Likewise, to
include you on the Member Interests page, I need a brief summary, plus
the titles of one or two papers, if you like (DOIs would be very wel-
come, too). You can see what I've posted for myself. To protect members
from spamming, my policy is to not post email addresses on the website.

Beyond this, there are any number of ways I welcome input. I'm open to
suggestions amending the Statement of Purpose. If you have suggestions
you would like to share with other members, send them and I'll add them
to the page reserved for that. It will be done anonymously unless you
state otherwise explicitly. If you have scheduled presentations, let me
know (aside from PacificChem, which I will add later).

As before, I'm appending the mailing list. If there's anyone else you
think should be included, please let me know.

      Thanks!

      Dave Woon

Mailing #2005.01 (September)
      Hello,

I've given some thought lately to the idea of trying to organize those
of us who make theoretical contributions to astrochemistry at the mo-
lecular level. We're a diffuse group, making up a small percentage of
the total expertise in the field. The experimentalists and modelers
generally know what we can do for them, but I do not think most of the
astronomers are particularly aware of us. In these days of tight fund-
ing, I believe it's in our best interest to work together to improve
      our visibility within the community.

I am writing to see if you are interested in being a part of what I
call "The Theory of Astrochemical Processes Network." I've sent this to
you because you have treated astrochemical problems at the molecular
level in the recent past. From my perspective, the following activities
qualify, if directed toward addressing astrochemical issues in the in-
terstellar medium or within the solar system: quantum chemical calcula-
tions of reactions, structure, spectroscopy, or interactions, theoreti-
cal studies of reaction or collision rates, and molecular dynamics
studies. I'm open to altering or expanding this if I've overlooked any-
thing. I do not include reaction network modelers: we provide some of
the inputs for what they do, but they usually do not involve themselves
directly in characterizing behavior at the molecular level. Those that
      do, would of course qualify.

I believe it would help all of us if we were to work together at least
loosely to promote what we do for astrochemistry. I'm starting small:
I want to know if anyone else is interested. As a beginning, it would
probably help us just to know who else is working in the field and what
they're working on. I have other ideas for things we can do, but let me
start by asking you to send me a reply informing me whether you are
willing or not to be a member of the network. If there's sufficient
interest, I'll follow this up soon with another mailing.

At the bottom of this message, you will find a list of people to whom
I'm sending this email. I'm sure I've missed a number of people. If you
know someone that should have been included, please send me their name
(and email address, if possible). Postdocs and students working in the
area are just as welcome to be a part of the network as more senior
      scientists.

      Thanks for your consideration,
      Dave Woon
